Istanbul to Malatya. Sun 27 Sept - Thurs 1 Oct (1)

This was one of the most exciting,   exhilarating, frightening and educational holidays I have ever experienced!  Turkey is now my favourite country for the diversity of landscapes, hospitable natives and delicious food.  I can't remember how old I was when I thought I must see  Istanbul  and  Cappadocia  but it wasn't until I saw a picture of a statue on the side of teletext on tv  (if anyone can remember that!) that I finally discovered  Mount Nemrut .  The bust looked like one on Easter Island and years later, I was able to investigate on google and found where the head was.  Seeing films like James Bond's 'From Russia with Love'  and 'Taken' made me want to go to Turkey all the more.  Because I wanted to travel so far in one hit, I looked to see if I could do it all by train and thanks to friends putting me on to ' maninseat6 1 ' I discovered I could.  I always try to see as much as I can of a country as I ...

Thursday 1 October I  couldn't get hold of Ramo on my phone so I tried to ask the Mustafa the barman to phone ahead for me to say we were arriving but he didn't understand.  The train pulled up at Malatya and Ramo was there to greet us! A lovely smile and so welcoming and took our cases to his car.  The train was only 5 minutes late, amazing.  I think they thought it unusual for tourists to arrive by train.  Instead of taking us to Gunes hotel (which I didn't realise was over 2 hours drive away, obvious really as it's up the top of  mount Nemrut!)  he took us to his tourist office in Malatya town and we had to wait until 12.30 for transport to take us with a party from China, a 2 hour trip with a stop for lunch on the way.  Office at Malatya  I was so damn tired from lack of sleep on the train but we decided to have a look round Malatya.  One young couple were sleeping in the reception area. It was a very hot, sunny morning an...

Saturday 3 October Up at 6.30am as couldn't sleep because of Marks snoring, so tired.  No hot water yet again grrr. Had a luke warm shower and down for chay and then onto bus.  Tried to sleep on the bus.   We were up in the clouds and at one point it was like a pea souper, so much fog, you couldn't see in front of you.  A new road was being made and it was very bumpy as it was only just cut, quite scary but brilliant driver although he was on his phone most of the time.  We left at 8am and the journey back to Malatya only took 1 1/2 hours.  We left our cases at the tourist office and went for breakfast, cheese toastie and coffee.  Then we went looking for the apricot markets and found them, a bit disappointing reallly.   Apricot market Matatya is famous for  I had a headache and had left my pills in the office which Ramo had found for me.  Ramo gave us our train tickets to Kayseri back the way we came and...
